Why we are offering the MSc. in Joint Professional Practice
In November 2000 the Government published the report of a joint working group on the provision of speech and language therapy services to children.
The document highlighted the importance of close joint working between education and health staff to ensure that children and young people with speech, language and communication needs received effective support.
The Department for Education and Skills then funded ICAN, a leading charity in the area of communication difficulties, to develop a framework to underpin joint training arrangements for teachers and therapists.
The resulting framework, the Joint Professional Development Framework (JPDF) was published in December 2001. Our courses in the MSc. in Joint Professional Practice: Language and Communication, follow this framework, which is endorsed by the Department for Education and Skills, the Department of Health, the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, and the Teacher Training Agency.
The Department of Communication Sciences at City University and the Institute of Education, London University, with support from ICAN, created the courses to allow progression to Masters level within the JPDF. We are grateful for DfES financial support with course development.
