Testimonial from Elena Revelas, Year 3 student

As a Speech and Language Therapist and Co-ordinator of an outer London Mainstream School Service, taking part in the MSc in JPP has enabled me to:

  • Write a research proposal for our department
  • Distribute numerous good quality research papers to individuals and set up a 'recent research papers' library for all to access
  • Buy some excellent, relevant books that I can point people towards for our departmental library
  • Develop the service to our local EBD school and provide the new therapist with adequate support in setting up.
  • Highlight the link with SEBD and communication difficulties to groups of therapists and school staff in order to re-evaluate our prioritisation system.
  • Come up with some really well received new ideas to take back to the team when reflecting on the train home
  • Shift the focus of our consultative mainstream team from one of 'expert/advisor' to one of 'facilitator/co-worker' with education staff
  • Organise an INSET day for our team with training from mainly LEA staff on school stuff (p-levels, differentiation of curriculum etc)
  • Set up a joint training day for teachers run by specialist teacher and therapists on meeting the needs of language impaired children in science and maths.
  • Support therapists to carry out practitioner based research
  • Encourage the introduction of 'Communication Passports'.

I also plan to:

  • Train therapists on how to search databases using Athens passwords provided by our PCT library
  • Set up a working group of interested SENCos, teachers and therapists to jointly develop our practice in schools
  • Consider re-evaluating the prioritization of looked after children.

Other unexpected benefits have included:

  • Being able to type much faster and generally broadened computer skills
  • Being able to spout evidenced based facts and figures at a moments notice to back up my views.
  • Increased status (or do I just feel more important!?)
  • Improved clinical supervision of students (more up to date knowledge)

In short, I don't known how I ever did my job properly without knowing what I know now. And I'm only ¾ of the way through!
